Education University

Education and Training :

The New South Wales Department of Education and Training (DET) runs primary schools, secondary schools and Technical and Further Education (TAFE) colleges in the state of New South Wales, Australia. In addition, the department oversees the provision of pre-school, adult, migrant and higher education in the state.

The minister for education and training is Carmel Tebbutt MLA.

With a budget of more than A$7 billion, over 2200 schools and total enrollments of almost 800,000 students, the department claims to be "the largest single organisation, public or private, in Australia." DET spends roughly one quarter of the State's total budget each year. The DET is one of the biggest school systems in the world and the largest in the southern hemisphere. It also runs one of the largest wide area (computer) networks in the world.

Central Coast Campuses :

The Central Coast Campuses is the name given to three education campuses on the Central Coast of New South Wales located at Gosford, Ourimbah and Wyong. It is a partnership of The University of Newcastle, The Hunter Institute of TAFE NSW and the Central Coast Community College. It is affiliated with the Central Coast Conservatorium of Music.
The Campus is an innovative model where services and infrastructure are shared between education providers.

Australian Catholic University :

The Australian Catholic University, or ACU National, is Australia's only public Catholic university. It has more than 13,000 students and 900 staff on six campuses located in three states and the Australian Capital Territory. ACU, which is open to all staff and students regardless of their religious beliefs, is affiliated with the Association of Commonwealth Universities and the International Federation of Catholic Universities.
Starting operations on January 1, 1991, ACU was formed by the amalgamation of four Catholic institutes of higher education in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and the Australian Capital Territory. ACU and its predecessor institutions have played an important role in Australia by training many teachers and nurses employed in the public, Catholic and other health systems.
The university's mission statement aims to add a "spiritual dimension" to higher education in Australia, similar to the aims of the great Catholic universities of Europe and North America. There is a strong social justice element in the university's mission and programs—student teachers complete community service as part of their course.

Charles Sturt University, School of Visual and Performing Arts :

Charles Sturt University, School of Visual and Performing Arts, one of seven Schools within the CSU Faculty of Arts, fosters an environment of innovation, creativity and critical thinking in teaching, research and professional practice so as to enhance society and culture.
To achieve this mission, the School continually review the course offerings to ensure the currency of the content and to afford students the opportunity to achieve their professional career pathways; to ensure that graduates have the necessary understanding to undertake and participate in the process of continuous learning. Postgraduate courses are offered both on campus and by distance education at Masters and Doctoral levels by Coursework and Research.

Universities Admission Index :

The Universities Admission Index (UAI) is used in New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory (ACT), Australia, as a measure of rank in the Higher School Certificate in New South Wales and the ACT for entry into university. It has been under wide scrutiny for disadvantaging higher percentile students especially in the Australian capital (ACT). It is awarded to students on the completion of HSC (for NSW) and the completion a "T-Package" (tertiary package) (for ACT) - both at the end of year 12. In essence, it provides a ranking of individual students by indicating what percentile they sit compared to all their peers of the same age. The AST test sat by all tertiary students however links a student's ability with the school's mean, thereafter implying that a bright student in a poor school will be disadvantaged. That is to say a student may receive 100% at a poor school, but may still achieve 100% at a better school. This is an example of the problematic nature of the calculation process. Generally, in NSW, the UAI is determined by a series of end-of-year exams (HSC exams) plus assessment, whereas in the ACT, the UAI is determined by ongoing assignments and exams spanning through both years 11 and 12.
